's a choice not a referendum. i'm going up to new hampshire today we'll be on the campaign trail with paul ryan. we'll talk to him about campaign debate strategy, foreign policy, which i think the romney calm is about to make a big, new push on as there are growing questions about what the president knew and when he knew it about the raid in benghazi that killed the four americans and also about the state of the economy. martha: thank you, chris. that will be really interesting. we are all looking forward to the debates and coverage. it's an important night for both candidates. in particular looking at these polls for mitt romney. thank you, chris, see you soon. bill: it's almost a two-front battle right now, the economic and foreign policy. governor romney campaigning in pennsylvania today, a state that went for mitt romney. he scored big there four years ago. are the polls tightening? john roberts is live in pennsylvania. >> he's here at the valley forge military academy which you may know is general norman schwartz coff's alma mater. here in pennsylvania 40,000 jobs may be on the line i

of the divide what paul ryan in some respects was supposed to represent. do you think that romney has tacked too far to the middle? in the past week or two he's talked about taxes and suggested that actually on upper and middle-class earners that their taxes aren't going to go down, for example? >> well, i think it needs to be even simpler than that as far as the message, and i don't know about tacking this way or that way. i think genuineness helps you in elections. but what i would say is the main difference between the candidates from my perspective is that president obama thinks that you can hire more government workers and that will stimulate the economy. i see government workers not as bad people, but they're in the wagon. you got to have more people pulling the wagon. i think governor romney understands that. you got to grow the private sector. >> senator paul, thank you for being on today. appreciate it a lot. >>> okay. we got a lot more coming up. at 8:30 eastern we'll get personal spending data for august and talking about the effect of this summer's drought. . paul ryan has been pretty busy, almost nonstop, out on the campaign trail the last couple of days. and so, you know, i think he'll let his surrogates do the talking for him until the debate gets started. one other thing we heard from kevin madden yesterday on the campaign plane heading into denver yesterday, brooke, you heard over the weekend, chris christie saying that this race is going to be turned upside down that romney will have such a strong performance that it is going to be sort of a game changer. i asked kevin madden about that yesterday, and he said he doesn't think that the campaign doesn't think that one event, one moment during these debates is going to decide and determine everything. they just don't see it that way. they like christie's enthusiasm, they say they're feeding off of it, but they don't exactly agree with that assessment. brooke, we're all sort of looking to tomorrow night to be this big moment that is going to change everything and be a make or break moment. it may not turn out that way. it may be a draw. the candidates move on to the next debate and c
